Now that I am writing articles again I really wanted to make sure I make my blog as helpful as humanly possible. In order to properly execute that I asked my sister and my friends what articles they were interested in learning about. My sister responded by saying, “I really want to learn how to dress casually, but still stylish.” So that is what I am here to show you today! I will call this segment from here on out Style Session, and each session will include an item that you can wear in many different ways to complete a stylish, casual look.

Style Session: The Duster. The first piece I want to focus on is the Duster, as it has been trending in fashion for a few years now. The Duster is a really cool item and probably my favorite item in fashion ever! The reason is it is my favorite is a silly little tale about a young girl…

When I was younger I was home schooled for six years. I used clothes as a way of transforming myself into different characters in order to escape boredom, and to release my creativity. Those days I wore costumes to become a fairy, a Native American, a spy, a girl from the prairie days, etc. now I use clothes to live out my childhood fantasies.

The duster transforms a lot of my looks, and I get a lot of compliments such as: “You look like you’re from Star Wars, Miss Princess Leia!” or “I love your cape you look like you’re from the Lord of The Rings!” It literally makes my life complete that I am able to use clothes to dress like my favorite characters even in my day to day.

Now don’t let those comments scare you from rocking this piece yourself! Just as I have been saying in my other articles it is all about how you pair an item that changes the look of the outfit completely. I wear my hair in bug buns a lot or I wear crazy ensembles in general, but the Duster comes in sooooo many different forms, styles, cuts, fabrics, etc. and can take on many different looks.

I put together a collaboration of a few different ways I have styled a duster throughout the year to show you how extremely different an outfit can look using this item. In these photos I wear the same three duster vests (my favorite kind of duster). I made sure to show both a casual way of wearing this item, as well as ways you can dress it up to show a wide spectrum of style options. (See photos below)

The duster I want to focus on today, however, is the blue duster coat I styled in the pictures above! This outfit is the epitome of casual/comfort, but with a super trendy flair! I wore a basic black long-sleeved crop top under a black, sweatshirt crop top, black Guess leggings with an accent down the leg, black Timberland boots, a blue suede ball-cap, and of course the blue duster jacket.

It is very easy to be casual, but add a piece like the duster and transform the outfit into something chic and trendy. I love taking all black ensembles and breaking them up with a pop of color and also using pieces that are trending. I also love how the fabric of the duster offsets the cotton blends in the rest of the outfit creating a well balance casual to chic.

Note: I am 5’tall so if you are thinking to yourself, I am too short to wear this look… that is false. I never have had anyone mention that these items make me look shorter. I am always complimented whenever I wear a duster because it is a stunning piece! Maybe you like the tailored look, maybe you are more a fan of the flowing vest/jacket, or maybe you only like it in wool… as long as you give it a try that is all that matters!

What do you think? How would you style this item? Do you love it or hate it? What is your favorite look that I put together? Is it one of the duster vest ensembles, or are you more a fan of the jacket? Leave a comment and let me know! I always want your opinion on style. I hope you enjoyed the first Style Session, expect more to come!

I wore an olive green, flowing duster vest, a black, tailored duster vest, and a wool, tan duster vest that has similarities to both the green & the black vests.
